Statement of the Artist

I not only like to paint, I thoroughly enjoy other painters work. The turn of the century (1900) painters, particularly the Impressionists in France and the Expressionists in Germany hold special meaning for me. Their heavy handed use of color together with the slapdash treatment of form produces a live, exciting, moving, thrilling display, which always manages to remain decorative.

My goal has always been to be decorative- paintings belong on the wall- they are to be looked at and enjoyed. I don’t have any messages hidden in the paint and I am not seeking the latest art revolution. Impressionist approaches to artful painting continue to challenge all of us: Acrylic paint is the medium for current chapters. The final chapter for most of us who paint will hopefully be a gentle slide into abstraction.

Some history: L.T. Gordon earned a degree in Political Science from the University of Santa Clara in the early fifties. SCU did not offer art classes at the time. He did pursue various art studies at the Palo Alto Art Club, now known as the prodigious PAL (Peninsula Art League). He augmented the art classes with the study of the Masters. His personnel library of the 19th and 20th century painters is impressive. He spends considerable time on a near daily basis reading and reviewing script and illustrations from works expounding upon the Impressionists, Post Impressionists, Expressionists and other groups of painters.

L. T. Gordon has spent the better part of the last fifteen years at his home and studio with his wife, Mary Jo, in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. He spent prior years painting extensively in other North American, West Coast venues including Alaska, Washington, Oregon and California. Gordon has shown in art galleries along the west coast. He and Mary Jo owned and operated the Art Drum Gallery in Los Altos, Ca.
